Hello everyone, So Christmas day has come and gone and we are all a few pounds heavier, from all the eating and drinking. Many of us are still off work and don’t want to think about reality just yet.We are in that space where we are searching for the perfect distraction. Or maybe we just want to get away from our families for a couple of hours -Yes, I’m looking at you- The film bosses know this and this is why there are so many film releases around Christmas time.
I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned this before but in case you didn’t know, I love films and I especially love going to the cinema to see them. Today, I went to see a couple of films but I am only going to talk about one of them because that is the one that I think everyone HAS to watch. The film I’m talking about is “The Greatest Showman” starring Hugh Jackman, Zendaya, Zach Efron, Michelle Williams and many others
I have seen mixed reviews of this film but I’m really not one to let the critics dictate my enjoyment of a film. -I realise how this sounds, given that I’m telling you that this film is worth watching- but that’s not the point. The Greatest Showman encompasses everything that makes a film enjoyable (in my opinion of course). It is a musical, which is fabulous in itself. It is also a period film – so we already know that there is a lot of prejudice to be seen- and it is a story about a man who let his imagination take him to great heights by being the first person to open a circus. You can imagine how such an idea was received in a time when everyone wanted to be more straightlaced than a ruler. However, he persevered amidst all the criticism and lack of support from outsiders – because he always had the support of his family- and eventually, he made a success of his idea.Of course, seeing as this is a film about people, there are hidden layers about their characters to be discovered.
There a few themes which tugged at my heartstrings while watching this. For example, there was a running theme of Forbidden Love. It was doubly interesting because it showed different kinds of forbidden love, not only that obstructed by class but also those obstructed by the way interracial relationships were viewed in the past. As a person who is forever entranced by the romantic, their stories were ones which I paid attention to with bated breath and I’m sure you will too because I shall not tell you what happened to them – you will have to see the film for that.
Another theme which I feel makes it the perfect film for the end of the year is that of Determination. The main character (Hugh Jackman) knew that he had a dream and even though he received countless nos and was scoffed at by almost everyone, he managed to turn all his losses into a win and eventually create the life he wanted for himself and his family. It is the perfect attitude for us, as the viewers to take with us into the next year and all the years after that because the people who become successful are those who continue to do, instead of quitting. I was very inspired and I hope that you will be inspired too when you watch the film.
Then, we move on to the theme of Family. Once again, this is the perfect time for this theme because, at Christmas time, everyone’s mind is either on their relationship with family or the lack thereof. The film explored the meaning of Family. Some of us are bound as a family by birth.Others create their family through friendship, work, life and so on. It showed us that family is not necessarily the people that are thrust upon you by life and that if all else fails, you can create your own family. I think this was a very important message interwoven throughout the fabric of this film.
There were also other messages like the fact that ‘what we want isn’t necessarily what we need’. Sometimes, we chase the sparkly crystals and neglect to polish the gold which is sitting right there in front of us. I could go on and on but then, there would be no mystery left for you to uncover when you watch the film. I will just say that I’m not sure if it was supposed to be a happy musical because I cried all the way through (mostly happy tears but still). I absolutely loved Zendaya in it as well, I’m loving the actress she is growing into and I am excitedly watching this space. The music was absolutely fantastic as well, very uplifting and catchy for the most part and there were a few heartrending pieces in there. My favourite song was “This is me ” and I shall be downloading it on Spotify straight after publishing this post.
Well, I hope you all go to see it but if not, I hope you’ve learnt something from this post. Until next time, Ciao xx
